چکیده

The IEEE 802.11 MAC protocol cannot support quality of service (QoS) requirements. In order to provide QoS in the IEEE 802.11 MAC protocol, the IEEE 802.11e has been standardized. These standards provide multiple transmission rates, which can be changed dynamically according to the channel condition. When using multiple transmission rates, the capacity of wireless LAN improves, but the performance anomaly problem may occur. Cooperative communications were introduced to alleviate the performance anomaly problem with the help of relay nodes with higher transmission rates. Previous cooperative communications protocols are based on the IEEE 802.11 DCF MAC protocol. That is, none of them takes the IEEE 802.11e EDCA into consideration. In this paper, we apply the EDCA features such as TXOP and block ACK for cooperative communications. Simulation results show that the proposed protocol works well and improves network performance. A performance analysis of block ACK scheme for IEEE 802.11e networks

The demand for the IEEE 802.11 wireless local-area networks (WLANs) has been drastically increasing along with many emerging applications and services over WLAN. However, the IEEE 802.11 medium access control (MAC) is known to be limited in terms of its throughput performance due to the high MAC overhead, such as interframe spaces (IFS) or per-frame based acknowledgement (ACK) frame transmissio...

Implicit Block ACK Scheme for IEEE 802.11 WLANs

The throughput of IEEE 802.11 standard is significantly bounded by the associated Medium Access Control (MAC) overhead. Because of the overhead, an upper limit exists for throughput, which is bounded, including situations where data rates are extremely high. Therefore, an overhead reduction is necessary to achieve higher throughput. The IEEE 802.11e amendment introduced the block ACK mechanism,...

IEEE 802.11e Wireless LAN for Quality of Service

In this paper, a comprehensive overview of the new features of an upcoming new standard IEEE 802.11e to support Quality of Service (QoS) in Wireless Local Area Networks (WLANs) is presented. We address Medium Access Control (MAC) enhancements found in the current 802.11e draft specification by emphasizing the differences from the legacy 802.11 standard. New mechanisms for QoS support, namely En...

Study of Quality of Service by using 802.11e

Wireless Local Area Networks (WLANs) are one of the fastest growing wireless access technologies. The IEEE 802.11 Standard doesn’t support any QoS mechanisms. IEEE 802.11 MAC layer supports two basic access mechanisms, DCF (Distributed Coordination Function) and PCF (Point Coordination Function). The EDCA mechanism of the IEEE 802.11e standard provides QoS support through service differentiatio...

Adaptive Multi-polling Scheduler for QoS Support of Video Transmission in IEEE 802.11e WLANs

The 802.11E Task Group has been established to enhance Quality of Service (QoS) provision for time-bounded services in the current IEEE 802.11 Medium Access Control (MAC) protocol. The QoS is introduced throughout Hybrid Coordination Function Controlled Channel Access (HCCA) for the rigorous QoS provision. In HCCA, the station is allocated a fixed Transmission Opportunity (TXOP) based on its TS...
